Opera director

Ana Cuéllar, born in Mallorca, studied music theatre directing at the Hanns Eisler Academy of Music in Berlin and clarinet at "Musikene" (music academy in the Basque Country). He received masterclasses from directors like Katharina Wagner, Nadja Loschky, Calixto Bieito, Michael Talheimer and Marta Pazos.
She directed the premiere of the chamber opera "Unser Vater/Vater unser" (Sergey Kim) at the Tischlerei of the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the new Music Theater piece “Bésame mucho” (M. Giessen) at the Neuköllner Oper and "La serva padrona" (G.B.Pergolesi) at the Teatre Principal (Mallorca).
Since 2017 she has been working internationally as a freelance assistant director in different opera houses as Staatsoper Unter den Linden, Opéra Paris Bastille, Teatro di San Carlo, Staatsoper Hamburg, Nationaltheater Mannheim, Staatstheater Stuttgart Philharmonie Luxembourg, Liceu of Barcelona or Teatre Principal de Palma. There she was able to work with directors such as Calixto Bieito, Bob Wilson, Immo Karaman, Dmitri Tcherniakov, Claus Guth or Marta Pazos among others. She is associate director of the Berlin alternative opera company "Novoflot" since 2020, with whom she has collaborated in productions at the Copenhagen Opera Festival and the Athens Opera.
Ana Cuéllar is one of the 12 artists of the "Young Woman Opera Makers" residency at the Academy of the Aix-en-Provence Festival, where she was mentored by the renowned director Katie Mitchell between 2021 and 2022. In her research of new operatic languages, she participated in the "Seminario de nueva ópera" in Buenos Aires (2019), where she was able to work with different composers in the development of new operas.
She won a grand from Fonds Darstellende Künste Berlin to develop a new opera-cabaret, “LOCA”, about madness and the power of the narrative. Future projects include an updated version of "King Arthur" (H.Purcell) with the baroque orchestra "Ars Musicae'' in Mallorca.
